On vacation and when you have a few minutes very early at the beach (on Cape Cod) before the hordes of people get there, you can scurry around on a Sunday morning and get nice photos. So you’re driving around rural, central Florida hunting for photographs in the middle of the day. It’s hot, the shadows are harsh. There almost nothing out there. But I see this lone palm tree on a random road in Bradenton, FL. There are trucks whizzing by. I stop on the side of the road and take this photo. One lone palm tree in front of a pasture. I break rules – NO “rule of thirds”. – I put the subject right smack in the middle (but I do plan to crop this square). – I shoot in the harsh light
You’re walking around suddenly something catches your eye. For me, it is often electrical boxes. I know that sounds mundane, but I find the asymmetry appealing as subjects. This one in Covington, GA struck me with its off-white color, but there was that little touch of blue on the tags that was nice. I think that they painted everything to match, including the connection box and the wires, which added to the scene. I had to give it a little extra exposure, maybe 1 stop to make it right, as the in-camera meter would have made everything gray.
These two photos are from two different cities, but reflect the commonality of functional architectural details. I assume that these are HVAC vents and these two have very different walls, but similar functions. Just like I like windows and doors and standpipes, I’ll probably start hunting for interesting wall vents going forward. The brown one is from Boston down by the financial district. The green one is from Summit, NJ, if I remember right.
Minimalistic images. Most minimalistic images that I see in the magazines or websites are more often than not of nature scenes, long docks out on the water, lone trees, a single subject on a long exposure of water or similar shots. Those don’t present themselves to me much because I don’t go to such places with the limited time that a working life affords me. So I wonder around urban scenes, the backs of storefronts, etc. If I look long enough, lots of scenes present themselves like the two below. The left on was on the back of a store

Is this a Photoshopped wall? No. Absolution not. Just another super colorful wall in Cranford, NJ. I wonder why someone would paint the back wall of a business this color? The front DOES NOT have this color; only the back does. And it’s at the end of a dead-end alley. It’s not like someone would see the wall. It’s very odd Hot, Hot July, 2023

More minimalistic subjects. This a shadow of a building’s roof projections with a security lamp. Kind of like the bifurcated nature of the photo. I think this was actually shot with my IR camera, but it didn’t make any difference. Westfield, New Jersey
