Nighttime church

In Orlando for the Olympic Trials Marathon and of course, I have some camera with me at all times. We were on the roof of the hotel and it was just after sunset. We looked over the wall and this church was all lit up. I didn’t have a “real” camera, but I did have my phone, an iPhone 14 Pro. Took this as the light was vanishing with care to get it sharp. It was very nice in color, but I thought better in BW, so BW it is. The church is the First United Methodist Church in downtown […]

Reflections in Stripes

At the Rumson country club, where we recently attended a wedding. It had just rained pretty hard and as you walked up the stairs to go into the wedding venue, the floor was made of a decking material. The decking had cupped, as they usually do, and the water was pooling in the cupped deck planks. This guy, probably one of the band members, walked outside to grab a smoke and I snapped this with my iPhone. Of course, it was upside down, so I flipped it both Horizontally and Vertically so he would be looking left-to-right and right side

Yellow Window & Detritis

Boston MA. Just a random scene in the main tourist area near the Omni Parker House hotel in downtown Boston. I loved the Yellow echos of the window, the pole, and whatever that is on the left. Also love the blue and green items, otherwise it would have been too monochromatic. I had mixed results from feedback on this image from Instagram, but I think people just get tired of seeing these sorts of urban disorganization photos. iPhone 14Pro

Abstract – What is it?

I shot this photo in Boston with my iPhone and it really struck me as very cool. I posted the photo and a local group and asked people what it was. Nobody really knew, as it’s completely out of context. See if you can figure out what it is before I put the answer and a contextual shot below This is the place where the shot was taken……….I didn’t include the actual object. Can you guess now? The Photo is of a metal, concrete-filled guard post like the one on the left of the photo. The post that was the

High Key Roses

Went outside to see a lovely bush of Pink/Orange miniature rose bush that I have. It just started blooming last week and probably has 100 blooms on it. I took a few “normal” rose shots of the pretty flowers but wanted something different and I did not have a lot of time. So I took my iPhone and shot up at the sky from underneath the roses. It was too dark, of course, with the iPhone. And I just didn’t have the time to run back inside and get my “real” camera and take what I had envisioned. So I

Fire Escape

Walking in NYC, you never know what you will find. Was at brunch with my family ad had a few minutes outside with the iPhone and saw this scene (in color of course), but thought that it would make a good scene. No distractions, no wires. Nothing but pattern. I had to straighten it up a bit in Lightroom mobile, but after that and a bump in contrast, I thought it turned out very nicely.

Purple and Pink

Walked around the town of Westfield on a nice cloudy day in mid-January hunting for photos of architectural items. It was a Saturday, so things were not super crazy and busy. Walked down Prospect St and this was painted on the side of a building off Prospect Street in an alley. There are two windows separated by about 10 ft, with a big purple wall all over the whole building. I took these two with my iPhone 14Pro, but I need to come back and do a swing-lens film shot on a similarly grey day. The colors are wonderful. Pink

ICM Carpet – STL

I was in the St. Louis airport waiting for a plane to depart and had some time to kill. I thought that maybe I could do some Intentional Camera Movement photos with my iPhone14Pro. I used the Lightroom mobile app and was fairly happy with the final results…..except. 1. You can’t vary the aperture, only the shutter speed and the ISO. This meant that my photos were about 4-5 stops over exposed. The Apple RAW format allowed me to extract detail, but it wasn’t pretty.2. I need to order a clip-on ND filter 3. I need to take my Olympus

Fall Leaves – iPhone14

I know this is becoming a cliche, but it is amazing what the iPhone can do, especially the new iPhone14. These were taken about 30 min past sunset, handheld. The EXIF data says 1/5 sec at f/1.8. The ISO says <mixed>, whatever that is. It was quite dim here, distantly lit by a street lamp. I’m surprised at the clarity, the color richness, and the sharpness. It’s as “they” say, the best camera is the one you have with you. This was also shot in Apple Pro Raw 48bit, so it benefits from that, although I just opened the .HEIC

Sometimes the best camera is your phone

So the mantra with many notable photographers is to Always have a Camera with you. If you travel for business, like I do, you can’t really take a camera everywhere. It’s just not practical and you have explain to your boss, colleagues, and clients why you have a nerdy camera with you. So I don’t do that and won’t unless I have a chance to make a pre- or post-trip on my own.So the modern equivalent is the smartphone. They take as good a pictures as most digital cameras for normal photos, shockingly good. This was a photo taken at

Martha’s Vineyard Beach

Was bored at the beach in Martha’s Vineyard at Long Point in September and decided that the waves looked nice, even at mid-day. The beach traffic is very light at this beach and so late in the season, especially light. There probably weren’t 40 people on 100 yrs of beach. There was also a bunch of seaweed growing out of the surf which made for very interesting patterns. Took my iPhone X out and started snapping. Took about 100 photos and these two sets of triptychs are the result.

The Snake River

Flew over eastern Washington state a few weeks ago early in the morning and took this nice shot of the Snake River with my iPhone X.  Nothing special, but having the phone is a lifesaver and increasingly negates the benefits of carrying a camera…..which is both saddening and freeing.
