. As lovely as the little village of Apalachicola, FL is, the edges continue to crumble and fail. There are glimmers of progress in this lovely little town, but the outskirts, and there aren’t many when you only have 2,000 people, are full of crumbling riverfront property. Yea, I know it’s the same old photogphers’ penchant for old stuff, but it’s still interesting.

Not your normal sunrise photos. I’m not a real fan of most sunrise or sunset photos because they usually just don’t look near as good in an image as in real life. These photos were a couple of days apart in Apalachicola FL taken in the winter. The sky just lit up on both days and I just had to shoot them. Memories and remnants of a local dry cleaning plant, now closed after more than 100 years in business. Nobody wanted to take it over, so not it sits ready for “redevelopment”, which means an apartment building with ground-floor retail probably. I wish I could get inside, but that isn’t happening, far too much liability. The frosted windows are lovely, with their pressed-in starburst patterns. Obviously this was done when the glass was hot, a long forgotten process, probably. The subtle greens of the window stanchions was a lovely contrast with the glass. Are icebergs pink? Well on this decaying wall, yet. Obviouslly this wall needs to be refurbished, as the skimmed concrete is coming off, but the colors really attracted me. I present them here as a series in order of increasing entropy. First it starts with a crack. Then the water obviously gets in. And during the winter, it freezes and calves large sections off. As the process continues, the bolts holding long-gone hardware is exposed, as the previous light-blue layer. Miscellaneous still portraits of the town of Apalachicola, FL. This tin fish was hanging at a curiosity shop out front. It looks like a weather vane. It sold between visits, as there was another. I had so many pictures from the boat dock in Post number 1 that I had to have a second post. The details can be subtle, but by walking around when the light is soft, many opportunities present themselves. I spend 5-10 minutes around this water supply to find a composition that was interesting, but also showed the lovely patina’d red ironwork I think this one worked and the subtle colors on the faucet were also interesting. Have spent time in the sleeply north Florida town of Apalachicola for many, many years as my family has been coming there since the 1960’s. Much of this fishing-village town has fallen into disrepair, but there is still a little industry, mostly surrounding shrimp, oysters, or fish. With the development of St. George Island, the community of 2,300 has seen a small influx of tourist dollars and had created a nice little downtown with restaurants, a couple of hotels, and some nice shops. Nearby is a fairly active commercial marina where shrimp boats tie up. The dock is fairly busy,

More OPAQUE images to compare/contrast with the ones on THIS PAGE. The photos here were taken with my venerable Olympus XA which I purchased new around 1979 when they were introduced. A now-closed dry-cleaning plant in Plainfield, NJ, G.O. Keller is just standing there, waiting for demolition and development. They had operated for 130 years since 1894 in the same location. The plant is slated for redevelopment into a mixed-use facility, as it is only a block from the lovely Netherwood Train Station. There are such nice textures at this site. The photos were taken with a Voigtlander Bessa-R Rangefinder camera made in the 90’s with a similar vintage Norton f/1.5 Aspherical lens. Panoramic Pinhole photos. So how did you do that? I have a couple of 6×6 pinhole cameras, but they both operate by the old fashioned red-window where you read the numbers off the backing paper. But you say: “35mm film doesn’t have backing paper”. For Medium Format cameras that have wind-on mechanisms that count the frames, you can just load 35mm in those cameras with adapters. But otherwise, you have to custom-load 35mm film. I cut bulk 35mm film to the exact length of 120 film and tape it to the backing paper in the exact right spot. I then
